There are novelists who don't get published until after they retire. The Writers' Academy takes plenty of over 40s. So age isn't the key factor.
Commonly held wisdom suggests a five year minimum to break in as a writer, with ten years no uncommon. So the real question is, how long have you been pursuing this goal/dream?
I'm 38 this year and only now pursuing my dream of screenwriting. I have a ten year plan in place and have already achieved my first goal for this year by having a spec script to sell. I'm now well into my second goal of entering Script Frenzy 2010.
I am always intrigued by this 5 year rule, when is the starting point? From when you decide to become a writer? When you write your first script? When you quit your job? When?

I'm 51 and started a couple of years ago.
I just say "bollocks to 'em" if they think age is an issue.

Year nine of my ten year plan, but to be honest I don't think I'll ever give up as I love it too much. It's more addictive than crack.
