CBBC

Frantically working on my CBBC entry, trying to get it finished by the deadline. But a thought occurs to me, what if it's too scary?

A drama aimed at the 6-12 year old viewers, so exactly HOW scary can I make it? Do I avoid scenes with characters suffering nightmares, in dark places being chased by creatures they cannot see, or do I go,"BOLLOCKS" and just write it how I want to and risk a nation of six year olds weeing their pants in terror?

Mind you, if I do that, those children will remember the program for the rest of their lives, which is what good TV drama is all about.

Oh dear, what should a writer do?

At the Q&A we were shown a pretty scary scene from MI9 in which a boy's veins are infiltrated with all this blue stuff as he turns into some sort of evil thing... That was pretty gruesome and scary, too...

I'd go for it. As long as your target audience for your show is older kids rather than younger ones, then you could use shows for similar age groups - like MI9 and Sarah Jane - as comparison in order to assess whether yours will be too scary.

I think you'll be OK as long as your scenes are in context.

Don't bother compromising your vision, it shows.

The word verification word for today is "Octrab" - Eight rabbis.

Thirded. Write the story you had in mind to begin with.

Word verification: "shack" - meaning, uh, shack.

Scary it is then.

15 pages down, 15 to go, editing as I write....damn, it's going to be a close one.

Countdown 6 days 1 hour 20 minutes to go.

Less than 6 days - you've got to leave yourself enough time to do the entry form, get it emailed back to yourself, print the thing out and post it.

Yep. I'm posting mine tomorrow. You're probably safe posting it monday; I know several other people who are giving themselves the weekend to finish it.
